Cybersecurity, explained simply.

Practical basics for everyday digital life.

ONLINE SAFETY

Spot the signs of phishing

Phishing messages imitate trusted people or organisations to trick you into clicking a link or sharing information.

What to check

  • Unexpected urgency or threats.
  • Sender addresses that do not match the real organisation.
  • Links that lead to unfamiliar or misspelled domains.

Safer choice: Open the official app or type the known website address yourself. Never share passwords or one-time codes in response to a message.

ACCOUNT SECURITY

Make logins safer with MFA

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) asks for another proof of identity in addition to a password.

Examples

  • An authenticator app code.
  • A security key.
  • A device prompt you approve yourself.

Safer choice: Turn on MFA for your email and other important accounts. Do not approve sign-in prompts you did not request.

NETWORKS

Think before joining public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi can be convenient, but a network name alone does not prove that a hotspot is genuine or safely configured.

Safer habits

  • Confirm the correct network name with staff.
  • Keep device sharing turned off on public networks.
  • Use HTTPS and keep your device updated.

Safer choice: Use mobile data for sensitive activity if you do not trust the network.
